Individual vs. Team Sports For Maryland Heights Kids

There are growing numbers of kids in the St Louis area involved in team sports. Participating in these activities can be a very positive experience for Maryland Heights kids. They can enhance health and fitness, social maturity, and even cognitive development.

What if your child doesn’t want to participate in organized team sports in your Missouri community? Perhaps they have yet to develop the skills necessary or find team sports too competitive or intimidating.

Healthy Skin for St Louis Kids

Hi! Welcome to my St Louis children’s health blog. Today’s topic is ‘Healthy Skin for St Louis Children.’

The skin is the body’s largest organ, and it’s easy to take for granted all that our skin does for us. It is our first defense against germs, it regulates body temperature, it gives us the sense of touch, and so much more. This organ is always hard at work and parents in the Maryland Heights area need to be sure it’s working well for their children.

A common skin problem in our Missouri climate is simple irritation. Irritated skin is more likely to crack, which can increase the risk for infection. If your child’s skin is irritated, look around at some of the products in your home that may be causing it. Soaps, detergents, dryer sheets, and other household cleaners all have chemicals and fragrances that can be irritating. St Louis parents can try switching brands or reducing use of these products.

Basic skin care for children should include moisturizing after bathing, using fragrance-free products, and practicing good sun protection. If dry skin is an issue for your child, pick up a humidifier at any Florissant, Hazelwood, or Saint Louis drugstore and allow it to run in your child’s room while they sleep.

If simple skin irritation can’t be controlled, or if your child develops other skin issues, make sure to take them to your St Louis pediatrician.

Green Veggies Boost Immunity For St Louis Kids

Do your children catch every cold that goes around St Louis? Do they regularly have earaches, coughs, or runny noses? Including more green vegetables in their diets could boost kids’ immune systems and help them stay healthy, according to a study in the journal Cell.1

The study found that green vegetables help produce a chemical that is important for a strong immune system. The chemical provides signals to the immune cells in the gut and skin, helping them to function properly.

If your St Louis kids are like mine, convincing them to eat more green vegetables is as hard as getting them to clean their rooms. However, Maryland Heights parents can find sneaky ways to add more green vegetables to their children’s diets.

F-A-R For Hazelwood Kids With Asthma Attention Hazelwood parents of children with asthma: Johns Hopkins Children’s Center recommends the FAR approach to prevent flare-ups. FAR stands for Flu shot, Avoid triggers, and Regular use of meds.1

Flu Shot: Respiratory infections are dangerous for Hazelwood children with asthma. The flu shot lowers the risk of catching a bug and also helps lessen complications for those who do get the flu.
Avoid triggers: Hazelwood parents of asthmatic kids should determine the triggers and protect their child at their home, Hazelwood school, and wherever their child spends time.
Regular Medication: The meds referred to are the controller or prevention medications, not the rescue meds designed for use after an attack is in progress.

The Johns Hopkins article also reminds parents to be extra careful when the seasons change–a common time for an increase in attacks.
